In celebration of 60 years, SilverStar Mountain Resort is proud to introduce The SilverStar Mountain Film Festival. This is a new competitive annual event bringing the best of films shot at SilverStar together in the spirit of adventure and a love of mountain life. The Festival invites anyone, professional or amateur, from anywhere to share the stage and enter a film shot at SilverStar and produced during the Winter of 2017 – 18.

The Festival offers you the chance to meet other filmmakers and to exchange ideas and collaborate in a relaxed atmosphere at SilverStar Mountain Resort. Festival finalists are invited to join us in SilverStar during the Festival.

Things to consider:

  • Entrants will be provided with one seat for themselves along with a plus one at the festival screening.
  • Entries are not limited to one award.
  • Awards may be presented to the director or the producer of the film.
  • All entries will be viewed prior to the Festival by a pre-selection committee chaired by the Festival Director and Programming Director. Finalists chosen by this committee will be screened by an international jury and viewed by the public at the SilverStar Film Festival.
  • Winners will be announced Friday, April 6, 2018 at the festival. The jury reserves the right to not present an award, and its decisions will be final.
 

Rules and Terms

Entry details: please ensure you read the rules an terms in their entirety

  1. The dispatching of any entry to the Festival implies acceptance of these procedures and regulations by the Entrant.
  2. The theme for this Festival is Children of Winter Never Grow Old – Celebrating 60 years of fun
  3. Entries must be shot on location at SilverStar Mountain Resort.
  4. Films produced prior to winter opening 2017 will not be eligible for competition.
  5. The same film may only be entered once in the Festival.
  6. Entries can be of a minimum of 3 minutes and a maximum duration of 10 minutes – in either narrative, story, animated or experimental-art form – and can be submitted by professional or amateur filmmakers.
  7. Filmmakers from any country may enter the Festival, and are encouraged to attend the Festival.
  8. Entries with soundtracks in any language other than English MUST have English subtitles, are dubbed in English, or be accompanied by an English translation of the dialogue and/or narration. We recommend a sans-serif font with maximum readability against both light and dark backgrounds.
  9. All music licenses (including, without limitation, all synchronization, mechanical and master-use licenses, as applicable) have been obtained and all payments have been made that are required for the public performance of the music incorporated in the film.
  10. Screening fees are not applicable.
  11. All films submitted will be considered for subsequent screenings.
  12. All submissions will be retained by the Festival for adjudication, on-demand and archival purposes.
  13. All entries will be catalogued and made available for viewing to filmmakers, buyers, distributors, festival directors and the media in the On-demand Screening Room and SilverStar Mountain Resort Archive.
  14. The Entrant grants the Festival and its successors, licensees and assigns the right to copy and version the entry in its entirety to facilitate technical operations of the Festival, in and through any and all media formats now know or hereafter devised.
  15. The Entrant grants the Festival and its successors, licensees and assigns the right to use up to from the entry AND accompanying photos submitted to the Festival for promotional purposes of the Festival and its activities in or through any and all media formats now know or hereafter devised, including, but not limited to, the Internet throughout the universe.
  16. Opening date for submissions: Winter Nordic Opening Day 2017.
    1. Submission Deadline: March 20th 2018.
    2. Late submissions: April 1st 2018 (Subject to a $20 fee). 
    3. Finalists will be notified by April 2nd 2018.
    4. Festival: April 6th 2018. All results will be posted on our website after the festival.
  17. The Entrant acknowledges and agrees that all matters will be decided by Festival organizers or the Festival jury at their sole discretion.  
  18. Entries MUST NOT encourage or proliferate a culture or use of excessive consumption of alcohol nor a use or consumption of illegal drugs.
  19. Any unauthorized drone footage obtained without the pertaining authorization will be subject to immediate disqualification from competition.
    1. To fly commercially at SilverStar Mountain Resort you must have the SFOC (http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/opssvs/getting-permission-fly-dron...) and required insurance (we request $2m and Silver Star Ski Resort Ltd named as Additional Insured). We must also pre-approve your flight plan (locations and times).
    2. Please forward a copy of your SFOC for review, and a COI naming Silver Star Ski Resort Ltd. as Additional Insured.  We don’t permit third party drones to be operated within or above 500 feet of an operating ski lift. Please advise 48 hours ahead of your planned day on site as we also work with helicopter companies that may have machines landing, we will also need immediate contact info for your pilot that will be here.
 

Technical Requirements

Pre-screeners:

Step 1: For initial entry to the Film Competition, filmmakers are required to submit their film via FilmFreeway.

Step 2: You will also be required to upload a high-resolution file to SilverStar via We Transfer, an accelerated transfer software for file uploads, to [email protected] .

You will need to submit a H.264 in either .mov or .mp4 format at 1920x1080i/p or 1280x720p. Please submit the frame rate that your film was edited in, to a maximum of 60 frames per second. Audio should be encoded as AAC at about 160Kbps. This copy will be viewed by a selection committee and staff.

Finalist masters:

If your film is selected as a finalist, you will be contacted by the Festival.

Notes:
  • The Festival reserves the right to refuse films without English voiceover or subtitles as Finalists.
  • The Festival Producer will have the option to conform the content to broadcast-quality standardization or, alternatively to charge a fee (in consultation with the entrant) for SilverStar in-house corrections in the event of substandard submission.
 
Promotional materials:

Entries MUST be accompanied by one (1) high resolution image from the film to be reproduced, published and/or exhibited for promotional purposes as the pertain to the SilverStar Mountain Film Festival at SilverStar Mountain Resort. All images must be accompanied by the film title, location and photographer credit and will be retained by the SilverStar Mountain Film Festival archive. Please include these details in the Cover Letter in FilmFreeway’s Cart Summary checkout page.

Preffered format:

Digital; 300dpi jpeg and/or Tiff format; minimum size is 4” x 6” landscape or portrait. Please include a press kit.

indemnity

The Entrant agrees to indemnify SilverStar Mountain Resort and SilverStar Mountain Film Festival, their respective successors, assigns, licensees, and their respective officers, directors, members, agents and employees and hold them harmless from and against any and all claims, liability, losses, damages, costs, expenses (including reasonable legal fees) and penalties arising out of, resulting form, based upon or incurred because of a breach by the Entrant of any statement, representation or warranty made by the Entrant in this entry form.

grant of rights and waiver

By entering the film competition, the Entrant represents and warrants that:

  1. The Entrant hereby grants SilverStar Mountain Resort the rights to use the film as outlined in this entry form.
  2. It owns all right, title and interest, including the copyright and all intellectual property rights, in and to the film being submitted to the Festival and has the right to distribute, exhibit and promote the film in or through all media formats now known or hereafter devised, including, but not limited to, the Internet throughout the universe.
  3. All music licenses (including, without limitation, all synchronization, mechanical and master-use licenses, as applicable) have been obtained and all payments have been made that are required for the public performance of the music incorporated in the film.
  4. No material in the film being submitted by the Entrant to the Festival is libelous or is slanderous or defamatory or violates any right of privacy or publicity of any person, and the full use of the rights in such film will not violate any rights, including copyright or moral rights, of any person, firm or corporation.
  5. To the extent that the Film Producer may now or in the future be entitled to any so-called moral, author’s or similar rights in the film pursuant to the Copyright Act (Canada) or otherwise, the Producer hereby irrevocably waives and relinquishes all such rights in favor of SilverStar Mountain Resort and its assignees and licensees to the fullest extent permitted by law.
  6. By entering the SilverStar Mountain Film Festival, the entrant acknowledges and agrees to all entry Rules and Terms.
