Mountain Conditions | Summer Grooming

Sept. 11, 2008

To appreciate the task of grooming a ski hill, you have to see the runs as they are in mid-summer. The brush on the Headwalls can stant as high as 10-feet. This is no easy task. But our expanded slashing crew has been extremely busy tackling this area, with great success. As we wind down our summer grooming, all that is left on the Headwalls is Kassanova and Chute 5.

So far, our dedicated slashing crew has cleared the following runs:

•Ridge Run
•Lone Star
•Solitude
•Split Decision
•Attridge Face
•Southern Cross
•Bibs Bumps
•Moon Beam
•Chute 5
•Catmando
•Uncle Buck
•Davidson's Delight
•Pipe Line
•Abbye Road
•Headwall
•Rusty Whistle
•Aunt Glady's
•Wee Willie
•Fern Gully

The Spidex continues it's work on some of those hard to reach places.
Additional cuts are:

•Abbye Road
•Headwall
•Rusty Whistle
•Zypper
•Black Bear
•Larch
•Minerva
•Holy Smokes
•Bon Diablo
•White Elephant
•Here’s Joe
•Black Pine
•The Rush
•Eldorado Bumps

This massive grooming operation will make for better skiing and boarding. Now just let's keep our finger crossed for some early snow. Just, not too early!

Summer grooming has always been a priority at Silver Star. However, with the steep terrain on the Putnam side of the mountain, grooming has been an issue. Last season's late snowfall, a dry light powder, posed a problem on some runs on the backside. The snow wasn't heavy enough to weigh down the alders on some runs on the Headwalls.

This summer Silver Star has upgraded its sumer grooming equipment with the inclusion of a Spidex walking excavator. This marvel of technology as allowed the mountain to not only cut some of the much steep terrain, which previously had to be done by hand, it has vastly expanded the number of runs that can be groomed!

The goal is to groom as close to the 115 runs on Silver Star as possible, and judging by early reports, it looks like a no-brainer. Tim McCoy, grooming manager at Silver Star, reports that the upper halves of Aabye Road, Rusty Nail and the Headwalls have been groomed. In addition, off of Sunny Ridge the Spidex has groomed Zypper, Betty's Bypass, Black Bear, Larch Minerva, Holy Smokes and Bon Diablo. Other runs include Black Pine, The Rush and Here's Joe.

Stay tuned for a report on what our expanded slashing crew has tackled.

Steep terrain is no match!

Can make its way from top to bottom.

Climbs mountains in a single bound (not really, but you'll be thanking us when Putnam opens.

It's just a nice in the summer!

It's impressive reach allows us to groom much faster.

It has the ability to change its angle on steep slopes.
