Six weeks after the event, Silver Star’s “Month of Nordic” festivities are a fond memory in the minds of the hundreds of participants who came from all over North America to train, improve their technique, race, and enjoy some of the best early-season snow conditions in years. Newly-minted Olympic gold medalist Beckie Scott could be seen poling and skating around the trails, as could teammate Sara Renner and other members of Canada’s national team. Silver Star Nordic director Glenn Bond was ecstatic - ‘it was a super phenomenal weekend, we had a record number of skiers on the trails.’ This truly bodes well not just for Silver Star, but for the sport of Nordic skiing as well.
For recreational racers, the highlight of the weekend was the annual Turkey Trot Loppet. Fifty keen weekend warriors turned out for this 15km classic and skating event, which offered a great tune-up for the upcoming race season.
Note that the newly updated 2003-2004 Silver Star Nordic trail maps are now available, and it is a fine piece of cartography, indeed, detailing Silver Star’s 55 kilometres of classic and skating trails.
Finally, pick up the “Project Podium” 2004 fundraising calendar with twelve photos of great cross-country ski action! All proceeds go to Cross Country Canada’s skier development program. Calendars are available at Putnam Station’s front desk, Ski Dazzle, Valhalla, and other locations through the resort for only $15.
