Whether you are a competitive Master’s racer, a first time skier, or somewhere in between, come & enjoy our 105km of rolling terrain, professional coaching, exceptional grooming and the best early season snow in the country.

With over 26 years of teaching & coaching experience, Guy has represented Canada internationally at numerous skiing events. His strong alpine background has lent credibility to his Nordic & Telemark pursuits with the Canadian Association of Nordic Ski Instructors where he has begun his campaign to achieve his Level IV in both cross country & telemark disciplines. Most importantly Guy is known for his expert and individual approach and enjoys skiing with campers of all ages & abilities.

Darren Derochie

Senior Coach
Darren’s enthusiasm for skiing technique is contagious and his coaching tips are downright practical. With over 16 years of skiing in him including the Albertville Olympics, it’s safe to say, students of Darren’s see improvement in their skiing

Mike Bell

A Secondary school Principal here in Vernon, Mike is a past Olympic coach of the Canadian National Nordic Team & former CANSI XC Interski Demo Team Member (Captain) / Examiner. Most recently Mike was a wax technician at the XC World Masters in 2011. He has always worked to help his athletes and students to continuously improve their skills. His favorite quote, “Ski smart and ski smooth!” We are stoked to see Mike back with us at the camps.

Marie Cat is a fun loving and talented coach with an experienced eye for teaching the most up-to-date technique. She has been coaching at the camps & abroad for nearly a decade and brings her World Class ski-orienteering experience to her groups so you can be sure to stay right on track ;-) She lives and breathes Nordic and knows the best spots on the mountain to work on all aspects of your technique. With her experience as a physiotherapist and as a pedorthist she has a great understanding of the body and the efficiency of good technique. Come learn on her local trails.

Sandy Cook

Qualifications: CANSI Level 4, CSIA Level 3,  TELE Level 1, CSCF Level 2
Favourite Runs: Rusty Whistle and Alder Point
Sandy has lived at SilverStar for 16 years and has been involved with the ski school most of those years. Many years were spent teaching and coaching in the east while attending university for kinesiology and engineering. Other sports include paddling, running and biking – both mtn and road.

Norm was the co-founder of the SilverStar Mountain Cross Country Camps 25 years ago. Since, Norm was Camp Director for a number of years as well as a veteran coach and instructor. Amongst his numerous skiing & coaching achievements, Norm was selected as a member of the Canadian Nordic Demonstration Team which represented Canada at the INTERSKI World Ski Congress. As a lifetime skier and loppeteer, Norm brings both years of experience and a passion to our camps. He looks forward to bringing you closer to your skiing goals.

Andi Fancy

Andi’s educational background & competitive racing experience speak to her excellent coaching approach. Andi represented New Zealand at the 2009 World Nordic Championships. As a camp coach for a number of years, Andi has made a solid reputation for herself as an excellent demonstrator as well as providing unique insight to refining one’s technique for skiers of all abilities. In her spare time she continues to be part of the SilverStar Mountain Snowsport as an expert teacher in numerous disciplines (Alpine, Nordic, Snowboard.)

Back at the Silverstar Mountain XC Camps for his consecutive sixth year, Rodger has been coaching and instructing Nordic skiing for well over a decade to skiers of all abilities. “Rodg” started skiing at the tender age of two and spent his youth racing cross-country skiing in Ontario.
He now teaches both Alpine and Nordic and follows the perpetual winter in New Zealand and Canada. Rodg will help you to get the most out of your movements and improve your efficiency so that you can ski further, faster and easier.

George Young

George has taught skiing since the eary 60’s and spent 4 years living in Europe where he skied extensively throughout the Alps. Having skied in every month of the year and tried sand dunes to stretch his sense of the absurd, he loves to pass on his joy in what a pair of skis will do – flat , uphill or downhill! George has promised not to grow up until he’s at least a hundred!

Dave Harbocian

The enthusiasm that Dave brings to his coaching is contagious to both adults and kids. He’s been skiing since he was young and has a knack for being at the front of a race. Dave’s perceptive ability allows him to correct the slightest glitches in technique and keeps his students on the top of their skis. (*Note, you probably won’t see him with the green hair, unless you happen to join the kids camp by mistake)

Denys is a multi-sport athlete who has lived and worked at SilverStar Mountain for over 20 years. An enthusiastic coach and instructor, he believes while instruction can do much, encouragement can do more. Denys has been travelling through-out British Columbia in the past few years, running cross country certification courses & ski improvement clinics. An enthusiastic booster of all things SilverStar and Sovereign Lake, Denys is overjoyed to be part of the Supercamp team.

Jennifer Tabbernor

CANSI Level 1 and NCCP Community Coaching Certified Instructor since 2007
Jennifer discovered cross country skiing as cross training for mountain biking and road cycling in her backyard in Whistler BC as a volunteer ski patrol host.  She quickly fell in love with the technical side of the sport and began racing and then sharing her passion through coaching. Instructing at The Cross Country Connection, Lost Lake,Whistler and Whistler Olympic Park in conjunction with ski servicing and waxing at The Nordic Shop Squamish.
Jennifer is excited  for her third season coaching  at Silverstar & Sovereign Lake Supercamps. They are a great way to shake out any cobwebs, learn new skills and build early season fitness on amazing trails with amazing people.  You will be gliding faster and more efficiently for 2013!

Emily keeps us all up to date with the latest techniques in skiing. Her cheerful and unassuming attitude helps us all ski smarter and smoother!

Val Tinker

Val has an extensive background in both teaching & coaching in Canada and overseas. He is fluent in Russian and a graduate from the Moscow Automobile  /Highway Institute as a Mechanical Engineer. His broad background and passion for wintersports and mountain biking  has been a great addition to our Nordic Newcomer groups.

Karen Messenger

Member, Bachelor of Education / Honours Bachelor of Outdoor Recreation, Karen has an amazing cross country ski story as both a competitor and instructor. She was the 2011 Canadian Birkiebeiner Women’s Champion where she won without the aid of a pack. Adding to her skiing accolades, in the same year she won the 2011 Alberta Provincial Biathlon Championship. Karen enjoy’s enabling people of all backgrounds and abilities to embrace and excel the beautiful sport of Nordic skiing. She has a passion for education and thrive on seeing others achieve their goals.

Keith Nicole

Hometown: Corner Brook, Newfoundland

Keith has been involved with ski teaching for over 30 years and has represented Canada at INTERSKI on 4 different occasions. He was one of the first members of CANSI to achieve its highest certification in both x-c and telemark skiing.   He has written a ski technique column for Ski Trax Magazine for many years and has a produced a number of popular learn to cross country ski videos on You Tube. He also enjoys hiking and sea kayaking in the offseason.

Will we be skiing in both Classic and Free (skating) techniques?

Both techniques will be taught and skiers are strongly encouraged to ski in both. We will be able to accommodate skiers in just one technique.

Should I bring my own skis and boots?

It is best to bring your own equipment. Demo skis are available through Village Ski Shop (formerly Valhalla Pure @ SilverStar) and Stussi Sports located in Vernon.

Do I need to bring my own wax?

It is best to bring a small supply of your own wax. We will have some waxes from our suppliers for trial.

Do I need to bring my own waxing iron?

If you have a waxing iron, bring it with you.

How do I get to SilverStar Mountain?


If you're driving, connect with Highway 97 to Vernon and follow 48th Avenue to SilverStar Road and follow for 22 km (12 miles). SilverStar Road leads you directly to the resort where you can check into your hotel, condo or vacation home.

Kelowna International Airport is serviced by many airlines including Air Canada, Jazz, WestJet, Horizon Air - Alaska Airlines, and Regional 1 Airlines. These airlines are partnered with many international carriers and fly non-stop to Kelowna daily from Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, Kamloops, Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Red Deer and Seattle.

SilverStar is now the closest Western Canadian resort to Toronto. WestJet offers 6 non-stop flights per week, as well as daily direct flights from Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver! All Air Canada and Air Canada Jazz flights in and out of Kelowna are a jet service which eliminates any bag problems and cut flight times from Calgary and Vancouver down to 40 minutes! You will be skiing an hour after landing!

Airport hosts can be found in the arrivals lounge and are identifiable by their green vests. A frequent shuttle service is available between the resort and the airport.
