SilverStar Welcomes Ski Industry Veteran as New General Manager

Herwig Demschar Brings Lengthy Career in Olympics, Ski Racing, and Resort Management to One of Canada’s Oldest and Most Beloved Ski Resorts
Vernon, BC– SilverStar Mountain Resort announced today that ski industry veteran Herwig Demschar will assume the role of General Manager, following the retirement of longtime General Manager Ken Derpak. Demschar is well known in the ski industry as a former ski coach, employee of multiple Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committees, as well as the former COO of POWDR. Recently, Demschar oversaw the Alpine Ski World Cup’s wildly successful return to the East at Killington in Vermont and was the GM of POWDR’s helicopter skiing company, Powderbird.
Speaking about his new role, Demschar said, “SilverStar Mountain Resort is a multi-faceted jewel of a resort. It's a magical place that inspires me to get out there and play –and if a mountain can still do that to me after all of the years I have spent in the ski industry, it must be special! I am excited to have the opportunity to further build relationships with the communities of winter and summer sports' enthusiasts and to expand our involvement in their pursuit of creating memorable experiences.”
Justin Sibley, POWDR’s CEO added, “Herwig knows his way around a mountain – from its construction to its day-to-day management, but he also understands what it takes to be a destination for adventure seekers whether they are professionals or taking their first lesson. I am confident that under Herwig’s leadership, SilverStar will continue to grow and enhance guests’ experiences.”
Sibley continued, “I also want to extend our thanks, on behalf of all of us at POWDR, to Ken for his dedication and commitment to SilverStar and the surrounding community.”
Currently, Demschar is the Senior Vice President of International Business Development at POWDR Corp, which owns SilverStar Mountain Resort. He started with POWDR in 2007 as Chief Operating Officer, working closely with the General Managers of the resorts.
Prior to joining POWDR, Demschar worked in a variety of senior management positions for the Organizing Committees of the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games: 2010 Vancouver; 2006 Turin; 2002 Salt Lake City. Demschar was also a successful alpine ski coach leading the Austrian National Alpine Ski Team, both men and women, for 9 years before coming to the United States where he took over the leadership of the US Women’s Alpine Ski Team as Head Coach.
A native of Austria, Demschar received a masters degree in physical education and geography from the University of Graz, his home town. Demschar and his wife will reside in the SilverStar area.

21/22 Winter Season
SilverStar Mountain Resort wraps up a great winter season on the mountain.
A successful 21/22 winter season has come to a close at SilverStar.
The mountain wrapped up operations on Sunday, April 3, after a weekend filled with live music, the Sovereign2SilverStar Ski Marathon, barbecues and more.
"It was such a great season up here at SilverStar," said Chantelle Deacon, communications manager, SilverStar. "It felt incredible to wrap up this season on a high note."
After a couple of tough seasons due to the pandemic, SilverStar was thrilled to bring back in-person events, live music, full capacity dining and more.
“It was a wonderful feeling to see things start to resemble normalcy again up here on the mountain,” Deacon said. “Bringing back events was huge, and we really saw our community come together again.”
Not only did SilverStar bring back events, but the mountain also launched successful new events like the Sovereign2SilverStar Ski Marathon, in partnership with Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre.
Throughout the season, SilverStar also partnered with the Vernon Ski Club and the Freestyle Club by supporting their athletes with a combined total of $5,000 to help with expenses at Nationals.
“It is inspiring to see these local athletes excel in their sports,” Deacon said. “Supporting these snow sport athletes is something that’s very important to us.”
The 21/22 season at SilverStar even brought back many overseas guests that were unable to come to the mountain last season.
“We saw many of our Australian and other international guests return to the mountain, and it truly was something to celebrate,” Deacon said. "We'd like to thank all of our guests, staff and community for making this season a huge success.”
Play Forever Fund
It was also a season of new initiatives through SilverStar’s Play Forever Fund.
“While we celebrate an awesome winter on the slopes, we'd also like to highlight some of the non-profits that the SilverStar Play Forever Fund supported during March."
In March, SilverStar’s Play Forever Fund raised $8,000 for the Arts Council of the North Okanagan.
The funds were raised through various events on the mountain, with SilverStar's Play Forever Fund matching all community donations raised.
The $8,000 will support two local non-profits, The Legacy Fund and the Joining Hands Program.
“We are thrilled to have the support from Play Forever this March for the Arts Fund. The money will go directly into valuable community initiatives that really make a difference,” said Gale Woodhouse, executive director, Arts Council of the North Okanagan. “SilverStar has always held a special place in my heart and when we were approached with the donation, I knew it came from a compassionate and giving community. You are an inspiration, and you motivate us all to be better and do better and I thank you.”

The Legacy Fund supports community art and culture community events while the Joining Hands Program assists and provides adults living with disabilities varied opportunities to explore and develop their artistic abilities with other people of common interests.
Additionally, during March, SilverStar's serving staff donated a portion of their tips to the Ukrainian Fundraiser. SilverStar staff raised $3,000 and with SilverStar's Play Forever Fund matching that, a total of $6,000 was donated to the Ukrainian Fundraiser.
"We are so proud of our staff at SilverStar for taking this initiative. Year after year we have so many selfless staff members that genuinely care about supporting those in need," said Deacon.
SilverStar also donated $2,500 to the Sovereign2SilverStar Ski Marathon lead fundraiser for KidSport. KidSport provides grants to help cover those costs to ensure that no kid is ever left watching from the sidelines.
The Play Forever Fund supported a wide variety of non-profits throughout the winter season.
This winter the Play Forever Fund has supported non-profits like The Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation, The Vernon Salvation Army Food Bank, Red Cross Relief, the Vernon Gymnastics Club, Air Rescue One and more.
SilverStar Mountain Resort has now launched some passes with opening day tentatively scheduled for June 24.

SilverStar’s Play Forever Fund has donated more than $140K
to local non-profits since March 2019.
“With the generous contributions of our guests, other community members and matches from provincial and federal governments we have been able to match another $103K to the $140K Play Forever has donated,” said Chantelle Deacon, media relations manager, SilverStar. “This has led to contributions of $245,615 to local charities and groups in need like the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation, the United Way, the Canadian Mental Health Organization and many more.”
SilverStar's Play Forever Fund is stepping up its fundraising initiatives throughout December.
This Holiday Season the SilverStar Play Forever Fund along with the Community Foundation of the North Okanagan are asking local residents to join them in helping nourish the local community by supporting those that will be relying on the food bank this season.
SilverStar's Play Forever Fund and an anonymous donor through the CFNO are both matching donations up to $10,000. Tripling every dollar the public donates.
"Over the past year and a half we’ve seen food prices soar, food production and distribution have been disrupted and many people have turned to the food banks for help for the first time," states the CFNO website.
The Food Fundraiser will support those in our local community that rely on the food bank, by donating all proceeds from this fundraiser to the Vernon Food Bank (The Salvation Army – House of Hope).

To donate and to triple your impact visit the CFNO webpage here.
"With the recent destruction caused on British Columbia Highway's, SilverStar's Play Forever Fund has once again partnered with the CFNO to raise money for the Red Cross," said Chantelle Deacon, media relations manager, SilverStar.
"Our SilverStar Play Forever Fund donated $5,000, and the CFNO found two matching donors, totaling $15,000 towards the Red Cross. The devastation caused by the floods impacted thousands of BC resident’s. Our thoughts are with everyone who was impacted.”
The Government of Canada and the Government of British Columbia will each match every dollar donated to the Canadian Red Cross 2021 British Columbia Floods & Extreme Weather Appeal which means that the $15,000 raised locally turned into $45,000.
Last month, the Vernon North Valley Gymnastics centre was destroyed after the building caught fire.
Vernon city councillor, Akbal Mund challenged the Vernon community to donate to help rebuild the centre.
"The North Valley Gymnastics Club is such an important part of our community, and we know the very positive impact it has on so many kids and teens' development," said Deacon. "Our Play Forever Fund has donated $5,000 to help rebuild this extremely valuable asset in Vernon.”
SilverStar Mountain Resort continues to support the VJHF throughout the year, and last week the Play Forever Fund donated another 20K to the organization.
“Supporting our local hospital is very important to us,” Deacon said. “There is always a demand for new medical equipment and upgrades. The VJH Foundation is a pillar in our community and we encourage anyone who can, to donate.”

Family Day at SilverStar Mountain Resort to Support Air Rescue One

On Monday, Feb. 21, as part of Family Day, SilverStar's Play Forever Fund will be donating $20 from every lift ticket sold and matching all community donations up to $10,000.

The funds will support Air Rescue One purchase a new detachable winch, a critical piece of equipment for saving lives in the backcountry.

"The winch allows the helicopter to hover over a rescue scene and lower paramedic crew members and equipment to the ground, commence treatment and quickly hoist the subjects and crew back up into the helicopter and fly to a waiting ambulance or trauma hospital," said Gavin Smart, Medical Director, Air Rescue One.

Currently, Air Rescue One does not own its winch, which has caused them to experience gaps in their crucial service when the winch-equipped helicopter is tasked to other duties.

"Having our own winch will allow us to move the winch between available helicopters and provide uninterrupted rescue service," Smart said.

Air Rescue One will be set up in the SilverStar Village on Family Day Monday demonstrating various pieces of their equipment - and there is even a chance to win some prizes!

"Supporting Air Rescue One lines up seamlessly with our SilverStar Play Forever values," said Chantelle Deacon, Media Relations Manager, SilverStar. "Air Rescue One and Search and Rescue services across our province are critical. Helping them raise the funds to purchase a new winch will give them the ability to provide an elevated level of service, and ultimately save more lives."

Air Rescue One has rescued 161 individuals from precarious predicaments since 2014.

All their training and rescue services are provided on a volunteer basis and there are no charges or fees for accessing Air Rescue One or Search and Rescue.

To donate please visit the CFNO web page.

Family Day weekend at SilverStar will also include many fun activities.

"Family Day weekend up here on the mountain is a great chance to get outside and experience SilverStar," Deacon said. "Starting on Friday, right through until the end of the day Monday we will have lots of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy."

Head to SilverStar for Scavenger Hunts, Gnome Roams, Kiki The Elf, and so much more. There will also be a photographer at the top of the Gondola taking family photos.

For Immediate Release

SilverStar Mountain Resort, in partnership with the Community Foundation of the North Okanagan, has raised more than $5,000 to help feed local families who have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the start of February 2021, SilverStar and the CFNO teamed up and started an initiative called Filling the Gap. The program allows families, seniors and individuals to have access to groceries and produce when times are tough.

"To date, we have raised about $5,000 for local families, but our goal is to get to $7,500 by February 28," said Chantelle Deacon, media relations manager, SilverStar. "Right here in our community, many people have been struggling financially since the pandemic hit. Working with the CFNO, we wanted to find a way to support those who need help."

SilverStar's Play It Forward Fund will match all donation's made to the cause, up to $7,500.

The Foord Family Foundation in Vernon has recently announced they will also match all donations made to the cause.

“We are so grateful that the Foord Family Foundation values this cause and will be matching donations up to $7,500,” Deacon said. “That means that every dollar donated will be tripled, that’s a lot of funds helping those struggling right here in our community.”

Funds raised will provide these families, seniors and individuals with a locally made Good Food Box filled with nourishing groceries, such as fruits and vegetables.

"Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, everything helps during these extremely challenging times," Deacon said.

A $25 donation feeds a family of three and $15 feeds an individual or senior.

If you have the ability, please help us in feeding those in need throughout our community.

Donation’s can be made here, until Feb. 28, 2021.

SilverStar Mountain Resort opens this weekend for Nordic.
Mother Nature pulled through and SilverStar will open about 25 kilometres of groomed, packed and tracked set trails in the upper alpine trail system, this Saturday.
The Nordic trails opening this weekend are accessible from the village via Cross Mountain Trail or Pinnacles Trail near the Brewer's Pond Base.
"We are very excited to kick off the cross-country ski season up here at SilverStar," said Chantelle Deacon, media relations manager, SilverStar. "At this time, we will only be opening for the weekend, but there is a possibility we will stay open for cross–country next week, weather depending. It looks like there is lots of snow in the forecast, so we are very hopeful that we will be able to stay open."
The forecast is currently calling for snow going into the weekend.
All SilverStar lifts will remain closed. Due to the very long climb up the trails, and with no lifts open, SilverStar recommends only intermediate and advanced cross-country skiers hit the trails this weekend.

Almost 25 cm of snow has fallen at SilverStar Mountain Resort in the last 24-hours, and the fluffy powder continues to fall.

"It feels like you are inside of a snow global up here on the mountain," said Chantelle Deacon, media relations, SilverStar. "It looks like a winter wonderland up here, it's getting us very excited for the ski season!"

It's a sure sign of winter at SilverStar with more snow expected to fall throughout the day on Tuesday and then again going into the weekend, which will likely bring the snow base to over 50 cm.

"As exciting as all this snow is, we want to remind the public that we are not yet open for the winter season," Deacon said. "We continue to operate equipment around the mountain in preparation of the season and there are many unmarked hazards about."

SilverStar has the nordic opening date set for November 15 and the alpine opening set for November 28.
